Matthew grew up moving around big cities in Asia (Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore), where he attended prestigious international schools with rigorous academic curriculums. He began tutoring in high school, where he enjoyed tutoring trumpet to middle schoolers. Nowadays, Matthew tutors test prep and has particular experience with the SAT/ACT and ISEE/SSAT.
Matthew is known for his personable and calming demeanor. He approaches students with empathy - remembering what it was like to be a student - and emphasizes the importance of intrinsic motivation in improving scores and establishing long term study habits. Matthew believes that every student is different; tutoring should be individualized to a student's strengths and weaknesses.
Trained to tutor using a socratic method of teaching, Matthew gently guides students to reflect on their own thought processes. He believes that helping students work through each step of a question themselves cements their learning and better equips them to tackle problems on their own.
When not tutoring, Matthew can be found acting, listening to music, and playing soccer.
